The Truckdriver's Son Dreams In Reverse Gear

Travis Tatum was named after Travis Tatum.

Like father, like son

But the elder was a Texas truckdriver

for more than twenty years

and the younger was a Texas teacher

for exactly two years.

Then Travis Tatum Jr.  

left Texas for the first time

to find a teaching job in California.

He drove on the interstate

with one hundred and one

tractor-trailers dwarfing

his mother's eight-year-old Hyundai.

She had just been given 

a 2018 Honda Civic

as a birthday gift

from Travis Sr.
 

On Junior's first night 

sleeping outside of Texas,

he had a dream

on a vintage Motel Six mattress.

Immediately upon awakening,

he telephoned his parents:
 

"Mom, Dad, I just dreamt

I was born again

and, of course, I was named

after my father

"But, in the dream,

he was a teacher

and I became a truck driver:

"Finally, I had a respectable income

and a secure job."
