The Origin Of The Term Feel The Bern

________________________________________________________________________________________________

has determined that the first person
to utter the phrase Feel The Bern
in 1925.

He was referring
to the photographic talents
of his darkroom assistant,
whom he called Bernie.

She was born in Ohio and
he was from Brooklyn.

They worked together in Paris.

Her name was  Berenice Abbott
and she called him  Man Ray.

We will now let her photographs
speak for themselves:

Berenice Abbott
(1898-1991)

Eighty of her photographs
are presently on exhibit in  Berlin.

Photoverio © (#216): Fret Not And Multiply

________________________________________________________________________________________________

This image is dedicated
to the Photoverio number of the page.

Just multiply the digits together:
6 x 6 x 6 = 216

If you like to bowl and also
have an imagination:

Think of what would happen
if there were 36 rows
of bowling pins.

There would be  666  pins
but it would be diabolically
    impossible to throw a strike!
😈
LOL

 Now
(Seriously)
I was just thinking:

Maybe if we had more respect
for that number as both a  perfect cube
AND the  sum of the first 36 whole numbers
but were less pre-occupied with
the  satanic significance of 666...

There might be more respect in this world
and less evil on the planet.

 Now
(Seriously)
I was just hoping:

But SCOTT, Didn't Your Algebra Teacher Tell You That L = M ?

________________________________________________________________________________________________

At one minute she had liked him tremendously—
ah, she had nearly loved him.
In the next he had become
a thing of indifference to her,
an insolent and efficiently

humiliated man.

Anthony Patch had no great self-reproach—
some, of course, but there were other things
dominant in him now, far more urgent.

He was not so much in love with Gloria
as mad for her.

Unless he could have her near him again,
kiss her, hold her close and acquiescent,
he wanted nothing more from life.
By her three minutes of utter
 unwavering indifference  the  girl  had
lifted  herself  from  a  high  but  somehow
casual position in his mind,
to be instead his complete preoccupation.
However much his wild thoughts varied
between a passionate desire for her kisses
and an equally passionate craving to hurt
and mar her, the residue of his mind craved
in finer fashion to possess the triumphant soul
that had shone through those three minutes.
She was beautiful—but especially
she was without mercy.

He must own that strength
that could send him away.

With apologies from Oliverio
for re-formatting and
adding highlights to
an excerpt from
The Beautiful And Damned

POPCORN

The woman in pottery
Ever young and fruitful
A basket of green leaves
And fresh breezes
There, each generation
Under the sun,
A dappled sun,
At the same time real
And clay. A container
For need that doesn't
Go away. Reincarnated
Each way.

What Have I Done To Her Song?

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Look what they've done

Look what they've done

They picked it

And they think I'm

half insane, Ma

Look what they've done

to my brain

Wish i could find

a book to live in

Wish i could find
a good book

Cause, if i could find
a real good book
I'd never have to

come out and look at

Look what they've done
to my song

Well, if the people
are buying tears
Then we'll be

rich someday, Ma

Look what they've
done to my brain

Being A Short Diversion On The Dubious Origins Of Beatles

________________________________________________________________________________________________

March, 1961

Once upon a time there were three little boys called John, George and Paul, by name christened. They decided to get together because they were the getting together type.

When they were together they wondered what for after all, what for? So all of a sudden they grew guitars and fashioned a noise.

Funnily enough, no one was interested, least of all the three little men. So-o-o-o on discovering a fourth little even littler man called Stuart Sutcliffe running about them they said, quite 'Sonny get a bass guitar and you will be alright' and he did - but he wasn't alright because he couldn't play it.

So they sat on him with comfort 'til he could play. Still there was no beat, and a kindly old man said, quote 'Thou hast not drums!'

We had no drums! they coffed.

So a series of drums came and went and came.

This Short Diversion continues  here.

John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney,
and  Ringo Starr  (before his handsomectomy,
when his name was Pete Best).

Finally, He Said Something Then He Said Something Else

________________________________________________________________________________________________

1955 BUICK

"Are we there yet, Daddy?"
I said it once.

He ignored me.

"Are we there yet, Daddy?"
I said it again.

He ignored me again.

"Are we there yet, Daddy?"
I said it thrice.

Three times ignored
is not nice.

"Where are we, Daddy?"
caught his ear
with my mouth
filled with fear.

"We are somewhere
and soon we will be
somewhere else."

Then I fell asleep
fearlessly in
the backseat
of our Buick

Rest In Peace, Aunt Esther ... But THEY Welcomed Your Presence

________________________________________________________________________________________________

She would tell me stories
about my Mother
when her brother's fiance
lived in the Bronx
and the Oliverio family
lived in Harlem.

She would tell
the exact same story
four times.

Each time
I loved the story
more than I did before.
***

I arrived in New York
on July 18 and four days later
I was told my Aunt Esther
died on July 18
in Pennsylvania.

None of the ten messages
I left on her phone
in Massapequa
were ever given
to her.

She spent the last year of her life
with her only daughter
that I still love.
 ***

But if all the phone conversations
Aunt and nephew had since 1971
  –the year my parents died–
were laid end-to-end,
then the world would be
smothered with our words.

Thank you, Aunt Esther,
for being my substitute mother
when that is what I needed.

Thank you for putting
a roof over my head
for all those visits
to Long Island.

Thank you for putting
all that extravagant food
on my plate during
those dozen visits.

(Especially the Thanksgiving
where Father Frank and me
played chess and drank
scotch excessively.)
***

"THEY" who welcomed you
were your parents +
seven brothers/sisters
and, of course,
      my Mother...
________________________________________________________________________________________________
Footnotes
THEY also included my Uncle John (her husband)
and Aunt Betty (my Mother's sister.)

THEY are also known as the Oliverio 2.0 family
because each one has graduated from
his/her mortal coil.

First Two Lines Are From F. Scott Fitzgerald ... Then Comes Me

________________________________________________________________________________________________

America is the story
of the moon that never rose

America is the story
of the Emperor without clothes
But with 1001 talking heads
and each one, certain that he knows
Why we aren't better,
articulating ever letter
One repeats,  the next is repeatier
sounding authoritative:
that is their metier
as they seduce
your brain
through
the media

Unspoken are the words
OH HECK!
then they receive
  a handsome check

 Seemingly intelligent
verbal pecks
segue to 1001
handsome checks
