BHM Honoree Owed More Than Apology By Famous Museum

________________________________________________________________________________________________

This is a preview
of a page long overdue
for anyone
interested in that thing called
Rock 'N Roll
:::
:::
The image
at the bottom
of this page
has a fixed position
—in the real world—
directly opposite
my indoor desk

I have worshipped
the image and
—more importantly—
RICHARD BERRY
(the man in the picture)
ever since

An extremely competent
Richard wrote a tune
in a calypso beat
called
Louie, Louie

Frank Sinatra
knew the song very well
(by a different title)

Frank sang
"One For My Baby"

It is not a calypso song
but the lyrics tell
the same story:

Frank's tale of woe
is directed at Joe,
as in
"set 'em up, Joe"

Richard's tale of woe
is directed at a
double-named barkeep:
"Louie, Louie"

For every person familiar
with Richard's calypso
saga about a lost love,
ten thousand people
are familiar with
the same song
sung by
a band known as
THE KINGSMEN

But
there is much much more
to this story
+
infinitely more to
 RICHARD BERRY
concerning such people
as the Beatles, the Coasters,
Elvis Presley, Etta James
+
wedding music
heard 'round the world

The BLACK HISTORY MONTH Honoree I Owe An Apology

________________________________________________________________________________________________

From the opening scene of
I had a sudden burst
of respect for
the actor portraying
a clerk in a music store

More than 2000 times,
I have walked/jogged
or driven by
the music studio
where Calvin Broadus
first recorded his music
but
—for the life of me—
I find
ninety-nine-point-nine
percent of rap music
unlistenable

For more than 800 days,
there is a sidewalk image
of the studio building
on this computer's
desk top
as a reminder
to create a page about
a legendary product from
a Long Beach high school
but I have yet
to post the page
to be entitled
"A Dogg's Tale"

That image is
posted below

Therefore
please accept my apology
for not yet
having done so

Mr. Dogg,
you are a credit
to the human race

BHM Honoree + Best Actor Oscar Nominee = Dexter Gordon

________________________________________________________________________________________________

has been with us since
a three-year-old
John Coltrane
said
"Dex put me
and He is
My Love Supreme"

Ten copies of
Mr. Gordon's
Jefferson High School
report cards
are securely stored
less than fifty feet
from where
I write this page
+++

The same thing is true
about  his junior high school
yearbook photos

In 1987,
Dexter was nominated
for an Academy Award
for his stellar performance
—musically + theatrically—

In 1999,
I earned my chops
as a legitimate
musical historian

My first paycheck
from Dexter's widow
is 2.5 times the size
of my paycheck

In other words,
$(20 x 2.5 = 50)

Black History Month Honoree: BUDDY COLLETTE

________________________________________________________________________________________________

—pictured below
with a tenor saxophone—
was a multi-reed musician,
 a groundbreaker,
and a friend of mine.

In 1949,
Buddy Collette
became the first
black musician
on a nationally broadcast
television show:
"You Bet Your Life"
with Groucho Marx.

In 1953,
Buddy was primarily responsible
for eliminating segregation
in the Los Angeles musicians' unions,
resulting in racially unified
representation
and these are his words:

In 1988,
Buddy Collette performed
for a most appreciative audience
of students and teachers
at Jefferson High School
where I had the honor
of being
the emcee.

Doctor Rorschach Blows A Fuse

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Doctor Rorschach,
our Master is frightening me.

On his most recent page,
he posted an image of
a midnight monster
with an outstretched claw
that can rip
through my skin
!!!

Doctor Rorschach
loudly interrupts his patient:

He's not my Master,
you fool!

This is nothing
but a piece of driftwood
on a black matte.

If you can't identify it
as such,
your imagination
is pure jelly
(and I have no idea)
(what that means).

But you might as well
call it
"Gnarly"

To Understand Everything About Love

________________________________________________________________________________________________

She vowed
to understand Love:

How to give it
How to receive it

She read every book
watched every movie

She learned every position
watched every talk show

But never after midnight
never after dark

She was a learning husk
From dawn to dusk
from rose to musk
 :::

Then she asked:
What did I learn?

And her heart did burn
like a singed wing
because
she learned
Nothing

Then she said:
Maybe, I'll just wait.

And the walls did shake
whispering the word
"Hate"

Then she said:
Should I quit?

And the walls did shake
whispering the word
"Opposite"

Then the wall said:
You can't have one
without the other
just as
you can't have a father
without a mother

You can't have Love
without Hate
but what is great
is when the former
wins
and all the sins
—yours and not yours—
dance and prance
on all the floors
and all the doors
open and close

The scent of the rose
fills your nose
with succulent breeze
if you know when
to sneeze

If you can't think
of both sides
then
you can't ever
learn to think

You can't swim
without knowing
how to sink

All that will matter
is you avoid the latter

HOODA HELAMI's Sonnet About To ... Throw Some Words

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

Throw some words
upon a wall

Some will stick
most will fall
and crawl
under a fence
to the land
of nonsense

But what sticks
is fancy-free
as graffiti
and clover
until it gets
painted over

Extensive research on the part
of Pratt Institute
(and the assistance of

that "Ted Kople"
posed in the nude
in 1962

But he called it
his "day job"
and the Institute

An Archival Image Of The 103rd Concerto

________________________________________________________________________________________________

 Spoony Oldham + Hally Buttah
are pictured below

Hally is proudly acknowledging
his legal capture

103 unseen people
on the world-famous
cheered maddeningly
[I cheered loudest]

This would never have happened
if Spoony Oldham
had not plugged his keyboard
into the "lamp-post"
and played
The 103rd Concerto
which is master bait
for the most valuable
coast-worthy fish
in the Pacific Ocean

Hally Buttah's halibut
measured exactly
37.103 inches
© Oliverio                 103rd day of 2008

If I hadn't been hungover
from celebrating the CarPeos
faux wedding announcement,
the image would have been
flush right
and the text would have been
flush left

103 ... 103 ... 103 ... This Is Your Day

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

Every page
I post today
—being February 15, 2024—
will reference
the number
103
in honor of
acknowledged
on the previous page

Had she never existed
then the same
could be said
of  me

Regarding the latter's non-existence,
delight, joy, and caramel creme
would be celebrated
by 103,000 people
within a radius
of 103 miles
of my home

Regarding the former's non-existence,
all that is beautiful
on this planet
would be
severely compromised

Up danced with Down
on level ground

Left danced with Right
their feet were bright

North danced with South
mouth to mouth

Yesterday danced with today
kicking up hay
East danced with West
they were the best

Young danced with Old
funky and bold

Memory and Future
danced with a suture
slicing this poem
with a hot comb
and
—my friend—
this
is
the
end
