No Sympathy For Uta Werner

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Did you hear the one about the 86 year-old
woman contesting the will of her
81 year-old  cousin on the grounds
of his incompetence to draw up
the testament?

There must be genuinely funny jokes somewhere
about this cumbersomely-worded premise
but this page is not where
you will find them.

The estate of Cornelius Gurlitt included
more than a billion dollars worth of ART
willed to a Museum in Switzerland.

To say the provenance of the ART
is suspect is to say that
day will follow night.
by his father who was hand-picked
by Adolph Hitler.

To say that all of the ART
was stolen from Jewish people
during World War II
is not quite accurate.

Some of it was purchased
from Jewish people in Germany
while a gun was held to their head.

at the age of eighty-one.

His cousin, Uta Werner,
claimed to be the rightful heir
to the estate.

She has lost her case.

But in the three years since the discovery
of more that 1200 pieces of ART
in Gurlitt's Munich apartment,
only four paintings have been returned
to their rightful owners.

The next Gurlitt page is  there.
