An Honest Hypocrite Talks To A Presbyterian Minister

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Your run-of-the-mill dishonest hypocrite
doesn't really object to
the fraudulent trappings of religion:
the vain ceremonials,  the ceremonial vanities,
the bland absurdities of this ritual called worship.
Metaphorically speaking,
he devours the sanctimonious goodies
because they taste good NOT to his soul
but to his ego.

Footnotes
The character speaking was within minutes
of becoming a widow

The minister (with his wife)
walked into the man's house, uninvited

The narrator of this story,
told in flashback,
is the thirteen year-old boy
about to be orphaned

There are two companion
(but independent) stories
within this short volume

The quote is from the title story
