The Original Corona Virus ... Jackson Heights, NY, June 29, 1958

________________________________________________________________________________________________

At O'Grady's Erie Bar
in Jackson Heights
Barry, Harry, Larry, and Gary
were known as
The Inebriatos

The bar was
under an elevated subway
and the neighborhood
was partly under
the poverty level

Pops O'Grady
set aside a corner table
for the Inebriatos

Barry, Harry, Larry, and Gary
had the blues
and their table
was painted blue

Their table also contained
forty empty bottles
of Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer

After deciding not to smash
the juke box because someone
had just played
twelve times in a row,
the Inebriatos
started talking about
HER

😢 😢😢😢
Barry, Harry, Larry and Gary
all loved the same girl

The girl
lived in a castle
and regarded the four
nineteen-year-old boys
as lower than the dust
beneath her chariot wheels

The castle was in a neighboring town
and the girl's name was
IRIS

The neighboring town was
CORONA

Naturally,
rhyming came easy for
Barry, Harry, Larry, and Gary
and so they sang:

Her parent were doctors
from Arizona
who bought a castle
in Corona

The castle would never be
visited by us
but in it lived a girl
named Iris

Just her name:
it gives us shivers
just to touch her,
we'd donate our livers

Our hearts are broken,
our mouths always cussing
despite always having
Flora from Flushing

What will become
of us
stricken by
the Corona Iris

She don't know
how it feels
to be crushed by
her chariot wheels

 What will become
of us
stricken by
the Corona Virus
...
...
