  1. On February 4, 1959 ... I was delivering newspapers in Brooklyn
    on my bicycle. Three New York newspapers had bold headlines
    about the plane crash (of the night before) that killed
    Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper.

    I kept twenty copies of each paper and preserved them
    in a vault ... Thirty years later, they were auctioned off
    for a half-million dollars.

    I had a sculpture commissioned of Buddy, Richie and Bopper
    and donated it to the city of Clear Lake, Iowa.

    The unveiling of the statue was presided over
    by Waylon Jennings, who was on that tour
    with Buddy Holly but gave up his plane seat
    to the Big Bopper.
