Upon Reading John Updike During Mass At St. Anthony's

________________________________________________________________________________________________

The words of John Updike:

On the beach at night,
it is never totally dark
or totally silent.
The sea soliliquizes,
the moon broods,
its glitter pattering
in the hyphens
on the water.
And
something else
is happening
:::

:::
Any words from
the gospel
or the sermon
about Jesus Christ
would have been redundant
in relation to
the italic words of John
BUT
the
"something else is happening"
is code
for a Savior

  1. Some people think it is blasphemous to read anything
during church services that is unrelated to whatever
    the pastor/priest/reader is saying.

My name is Richard and I am NOT
    one of those people:

Where did the Updike quote come from?

    1. Richard, the quote is from Updike in Cinncinnati
      and immediately transported me back
to the Rocky Point shoreline of my youth
and the most recurring image of
      The GodFather of Math trilogy.

  2. "SEE NEXT PAGE" ... is this a diversionary tactic
to distract the reader from noticing the change
    in the penultimate word?
What was the Savior became a Savior
    !!!

    1. "SEE NEXT PAGE" was not intended to distract
the reader from the penultimate word change.

Originally, the last two words were Our Savior
but it sounded too Catholic ...
      then it became the Savior
until I realized Savior can mean
very different things to different people.
