    Why does it NOT seem like a major leap to go from
    John LeCarre's classic novel to the classic Mad Magazine?

      Because both are extraordinary by-products
      of the COLD WAR, mythically between superpowers
      USA + Russia.
      The former due to the excellent espionage fiction
      and the latter due to our undying need to laugh
      at the absurdities of the Cold War
      (and ever other absurdity).

      But SPY vs SPY was directly related to
      the COLD WAR contestants
