On Three Consecutive Friday Nights In 1962 ...

________________________________________________________________________________________________

I dreamt about
the Whitestone Bridge
because I grew up
in its shadow:

The last exit before the Bronx
was less than two blocks
from the Oliverio home

All three dreams
—dreamt by a 13-year-old boy—
involved girls

1
Kissing my next-door neighbor
[Meryl Glass]
on a park bench
at the shoreline
of the East River
with a perfect view
of the bridge

The rush of tires
of vehicles
crossing the bridge
tightened our embrace

2
My dentist's daughter
[Ellen Birnheim]
and the dream boy
elevatored up to
the top of a bridge beam
and played strip poker

3
I was in the park playground
with Robin Ellison,
telling an endless succession
of dumb jokes
but she did not
laugh once
***

I  hereby present
THE DREAM BRIDGE
