for more than fifty years
It is why I have praised
Hockney's art
to the heavens
with a small qualifier:
I love all
of Hockney's art
except for paintings
of his naked boyfriends

HOWEVER, I do a favorite Hockney Moment:
It was the evening of my 55th birthday
whose morning began with me moving
from Burbank to Virginia.
I stopped somewhere in Arizona
at a Denny's because
I now qualified for a "Grand Slam" meal
On the wall behind the cash register
was an American Flag sculpture
by Mr. Hockney
I saluted the flag and stood silently
for thirty seconds, puzzling the hell
out of the maitre' d
in the process
