to have an British nanny
who eschewed traditional
bed time reading
of stories such as
Goldilocks
or
The Three Little Pigs

What the nanny read instead was
two novels by
Dashiell Hammett:

Parents of both toddlers
were unduly impressed
with how agreeably
the toddlers were
for bedtime

The British nanny
would sometimes read for
as long as two hours
but
many characters created by
spoke in "slang"
that was perfectly recreated
by a nursemaid from
across the pond
