Loud Greene Poem From THE QUIET AMERICAN

________________________________________________________________________________________________

≈
Wouldn't we all do better
not trying to understand?

Accepting the fact that
no human being
will ever
understand another
human being.

Not a wife a husband,
a lover a mistress
nor a parent a child.

Perhaps, that's why
we invented God—
a being capable
of understanding

  1. I would first like to express my gratitude
to the Long Beach Public Library
for lending me this cautionary novel.

Secondly, I DO NOT SEEK OUT
    such profoundly depressing quotes
as this one but when they cut to the bone
of BlogoVerio-ness, I must share them.

Thirdly, Graham Greene published this novella in 1959
and if enough intelligent, self-respecting Americans
had read it at that time...
    our involvement in Viet Nam
    would have been minimized
