CC: Carbon Paper

________________________________________________________________________________________________

The carbon paper of my fears
had rolled itself up into a creature
that moved stealthily in the wind.
Startling me with its rodent gait.

Its looking glass contents
are concealed within its new body.
Its ribs of foolscap contain my name.

The Saints have abandoned me
on orders of God who mocks me.

The artful black ball plays a game
scurrying past me to my past.

Theodore Roethke And Photoverio

________________________________________________________________________________________________

IN A DARK TIME

In a dark time, the eye begins to see,
I meet my shadow in the deepening shade;
I hear my echo in the echoing wood—
A lord of nature weeping to a tree.
I live between the heron and the wren,
Beasts of the hill and serpents of the den.

What’s madness but nobility of soul
At odds with circumstance? The day’s on fire!

I know the purity of pure despair,
My shadow pinned against a sweating wall.
That place among the rocks—is it a cave,
Or winding path? The edge is what I have.

A steady storm of correspondences!
A night flowing with birds, a ragged moon,
And in broad day the midnight come again!
A man goes far to find out what he is—
Death of the self in a long, tearless night,
All natural shapes blazing unnatural light.

Dark, dark my light, and darker my desire.
My soul, like some heat-maddened summer fly,
Keeps buzzing at the sill. Which I is I?
A fallen man, I climb out of my fear.
The mind enters itself, and God the mind,
And one is One, free in the tearing wind.

Theodore Roethke

Priorities Of A Political Analyst From The Washington Post

________________________________________________________________________________________________

If you believe, as do I, that God created baseball
as a relief from politics, I herewith offer,
as a public service, a column not about Trump, Cruz,
Sanders and Clinton but about Harper and friends.

We all have our ways of marking the seasons.
I know it’s spring when in early April
I start my morning by skipping The Post front page

and going right to the sports section.
It’s not until I’ve fully savored the baseball box scores
that I resignedly turn to politics.

Charles Krauthammer

......... Competence Is Neither A Job Creator Nor An Enabler .........

________________________________________________________________________________________________

For an office to function effectively,
competence must spread
through the rank and file.

Competence must be contagious
but that which is "contagious"
is a disease.

And anything related to a "disease"
breeds sick days and non-productivity.

Therefore, incompetence
is its own reward:

It enables another job
to be created to clean up its mess.

K. A. Gard:
Then we would not be here.

S. R. Tease:
Absolutely.

K. A. Gard:
Posiltivity.

S. R. Tease:
Posiltivity?
Why the slang, Kirk?

K. A. Gard:
Slang is the sledgehammer that breaks through
the concrete wall of Polysyllabia.

S. R. Tease:
Without Polysyllabia, there is no illiteracy.

K. A. Gard:
Without Polysyllabia, communication

The Real Truth would be
accessible to all... Ray, do you remember
what you said about Zeus?

S. R. Tease:
I said many things about him,
could you be more specific?

K. A. Gard:
Certainly.
You said that when
Zeus created the Lie,
the seekers of Truth
were up in arms.

S. R. Tease:
Now I remember. Zeus told them
that without the Lie, the truth would

K. Gard:

S. R. Tease:
Absolutely.

K. A. Gard:
Posiltivity and TBC.

K. A. Gard:

What The Hell Does That Have To Do With This?

________________________________________________________________________________________________

They could not
afford a room
at the hotel

That will not be a problem
said the clerk

We have a royal suite
in that price range.

They could not
afford to eat out.

They ate all their meals
in their suite with
room service
provided by
the clerk.

How is the THIN MAN?
asked the clerk.

Almost finished, Nat
he was told.

The clerk's name was  Nathanael West.

The man's name was  Dashiell Hammett
and the hotel clerk was referring to the novel
that would be completed in the royal suite.

Years later, the woman would say
that Nathanael was writing Miss Lonelyhearts
while they were staying at the hotel.

The woman's name was  Lillian Hellman
but that is not her in the photograph.

In 1934, Hammettt's book would become a best seller
and  Miss Lonelyhearts would become a worst seller–
selling no more than a handful of copies
when it was first published.

But history would be very generous
to Nathanael West:  Miss Lonelyhearts
has achieved the status of a literary classic.

However, unlike  THE THIN MAN,
it was never made into a movie.

Nick and Nora Charles,  the main characters
of Dashiell Hammett's novel, were famously
portrayed by William Powell and Myrna Loy.

While watching  THE THIN MAN,
my camera got up front and personal
with the TV screen.

That is the closest I ever got to  Myrna Loy.

There would be  five sequels  to the film,
a radio show plus a TV movie
and Broadway production
but it all began with
a starving novelist
in a free hotel room on  Sutton Place
in New York.
The same photograph of Myrna Loy
appears South of the Border of this blog
and links to an appropriate song.

Prometheus: Four Theories from Kafka + One From Oliverio

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

There are four legends concerning Prometheus:

According to the first, he was clamped to a rock
in the Caucasus for betraying the secrets
of the gods to men, and the gods
sent eagles to feed on his liver,
which was perpetually renewed.

According to the second, Prometheus,
goaded by the pain of the tearing beaks,
pressed himself deeper and deeper
into the rock until he became one with it.

According to the third, his treachery was forgotten
in the course of thousands of years,
the gods forgotten, the eagles,
he himself forgotten.

According to the fourth, every one grew weary
of the meaningless affair. The gods grew weary,
the eagles grew weary, the wound closed wearily.
There remained the inexplicable mass of rock.--
The legend tried to explain the inexplicable.
As it came out of a substratum of truth it
had in turn to end in the inexplicable.

Franz Kafka
 ************

Prometheus was re-created to protect
the skaters at Rockefeller Center.

Prometheus also provided entertainment
for some of them, such as
nine-year-old  Linda Oliverio,
a very adept skater in 1956.

She was thoroughly entertained
by her six-year-old brother,
a most inept skater.

He set a rink record by falling on his ass
thirteen times within a half-hour.

The boy refused his mother's entreaties
to stop skating.

He much preferred making his sister laugh.

Sixty years later,
that is still his preference!

The next GoFather/Kafka page is  here.

The Captain Of His Soul

________________________________________________________________________________________________

INVICTUS

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

Jeopardy Question #857142

________________________________________________________________________________________________

WE  gave a free concert,
rushed into being in just a few months.

There were no seats, no refreshment kiosks
and only a handful of rusty metal portable toilets.
With no turnstiles, estimates of the crowd size
were largely guesswork.
Some said 200,000.

Others more than half a million.
All [an] observer can report is that
it was dense, stretched in all directions
as far as the eye could see,
and was extremely good natured.
