 _______________________________________________________________________________________________

Chapter 16

"The circumnavigations
of the calendar"
is a phrase
I approximately used
in a previous chapter

I wrote it for
no one in particular
because no one
should be subjected to
such ornery phrasing
unless they understand
the poetic equivalent
of saying
as another year goes by

I've had 72 of them
but Plato didn't know
Vanna White or Pat Sajak
and
The Wheel of Fortune

I can spin my own wheel,
land on any year
 and weave a yarn
related to that year

That is,
Mr. No One In Particular
can conjure up
seventy-two memories
given
seventy-two
different spins

I hereby spin the wheel
and land on 1981
more particularly:
May 7, 1981

I was in a lawyer's office
somewhere
on the North Shore
of Long Island

I distinctly remember
shaking hands
with Vincent King,
wishing him and his family well
and vice-versa

The next day,
me and my Volkswagen Rabbit
—with all my life's possessions—
were California-bound

Vincent's family consisted of a wife
and three children

None of those children
had ever met
their maternal grandparents
who were originally
my Mother and Father

Obviously,
that means their mother
was my sister

We had just attended
the closing of the sale
of our house
  in Rocky Point
The house that was
a stone's throw
from this particular sight

Having the North Shore
of Long Island
 in our "backyard"
qualified me as
a beach bum,
despite having never surfed
nor desiring
to ever do so

The house was in
the Oliverio family
for twenty-two years
but would never, ever
have been ours
if it weren't for
the blood, sweat, and toil
of Sam and Grace Oliverio

The grandchildren
they never met
could not have been
in better hands than
those of my sister
and Vincent King

Their stupid Uncle
would tirelessly tell stories
about the missing grandparents
but always with his tear ducts
in constant motion

Neither did the grandchildren
ever meet Aunt Linda
who started pushing daisies
four years after
Sam and Grace
started doing so
and three years before
the eldest of the King children
was born

Linda was eighteen
and I was fifteen
when this photograph
was taken

Our younger sister,
[the future wife of Vincent King]
was a nine-year-old girl
who was standing
right in front of us,
alongside the photographer

That would have been
either our Mother or Father
with the other
looking out the living room window
of our Whitestone home

At that time,
the house in Rocky Point
was our "summer home"

Then along came
that ubiquitous trickster

Death got the best
of my family,
carting off
three-fifths of it
by 1975

 Vincent King
resembled an architect
in every way possible
except for the paycheck

Four years ago,
he had a massive stroke

Eight days ago,
my sister
and her three adult children
were at Vincent's bedside

The next day,
my brother-in-law
 passed away

R.I.P.
Vincent

1,2,3,4,5, Whitnall Parkway

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

1. Burbank Fire Station

2. Sepiated

    bottlebrush

    flower

3. Whitnall Parkway

    figure eight

    walking/jogging trail.

    You can see

    3 dot-like figures.

    They are actually humans

    exercising on the trail

4. On ground-level,

      adjacent to firehouse

    and ≈1/4 mile long

    is a very exclusive

    apartment complex

    called  Magnolia Park

    Many of its units

    are controlled by film/TV studios

    such as Warner Brothers/

    Universal/Disney/NBC

    The apartments become home to

unknown actors in new films/TV series

    with the studios hoping

    they are soon to be

    household names.

    In 1991, Jennifer Aniston

    lived there.

    Friends premiered

    in 1994

5. THE MEMORY

    I lived in a house

    across the street

    from Magnolia Park

    and one extremely

    fond memory from 1993

    is my then-girlfriend's

    two teenage daughters

    walking the track with me.

    We walked and talked

    about this, that,

    and the other thing.

    Both girls were

    as cute as a button,

    making me feel like

    the good "step-father."

    The third time we walked

the track together, We were laughing

    about their mother's spaghetti sauce

    stain on her nose.

We had just completed a full lap

    but suddenly the two girls

    reversed direction

    without my having

    any idea why.

I was soon to learn otherwise.

    The name, Slater,

meant not a thing to me

    and Mario Lopez was

    an Algebra student of mine.

   Obviously this was not

   the same person

but he had the same name.

This  Mario Lopez  was the star

    of a show called

    Saved By The Bell.

    My girlfriend's daughters

    walked behind the actor briefly

    then introduced themselves

as great fans of the show

    and him.

    Mario, whose character was Slater,

    graciously gave both girls

    autographed pictures

    and posters from the show.

    That was the last time

    the girls and I

    walked together around

    the Whitnall Highway track.

The Joker Can Save The World's Highest Paid Female Athlete

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

It is difficult to dispute
the following:
Novak Djokovic
is the greatest
tennis player
on Planet Earth

The highest paid
female athlete
on that planet
is also
a tennis player

Her name is
Naomi Osaka
and
she is the athlete
who lit the cauldron
at the 2021 Olympics

Naomi Osaka
did not play in either
the French Open
or Wimbledon
for reasons related to
mental health

She will not agree
to post-match interviews
demanded by tennis officials
and sponsors responsible
for making her
a gazillionaire

To guarantee
Naomi's appearance
in the upcoming
U.S. Open + ALL
foreseeable
Grand Slam
tennis tournaments
AND
allow her to bypass
post-match interviews,
 I offer a solution:

In lieu of facing
one thousand tennis journalists
asking every stupid
(and non-stupid)
question imaginable
moments after she expended
one thousand pounds
of tennis energy
on whatever court,
Naomi Osaka
agrees to spend
a private weekend with
Novak Djokovic

They look like they could be
the most beautiful couple
the sports world
has ever produced

14 Reasons Why I Love The Bronx + PARKCHESTER CIRCLE

________________________________________________________________________________________________

1. Aunt Betty + Uncle Preston lived
in a world-famous

2. Theirs was the first apartment dwelling
I ever set foot in

3. Without this Aunt and Uncle,
I would be presently living
south of the poverty line

4.  The CIRCLE Theatre is where
—in 1972—
I saw a movie entitled

5. Without THE GODFATHER,
there would never have been
The GodFather of Math
Trilogy

6. The concourse of the subway station
at Parkchester Circle
is below the "elevated subway"
and my commute to Harlem
with employment
as a substitute teacher
—sometimes after hitchhiking
across the Whitestone Bridge

7. Without Harlem,
I never would have become
a math teacher with
a heart full of soul

8. Circle Pizza and Restaurant
had a server who
—upon serving me—
shouted to an unseen man
in the kitchen
"It's Petey's boy"
and the unseen man said
"Give him two free slices"

9. Tangential to Parkchester Circle,
there was a pharmacy
 featuring a pharmacist
also known as
  my Uncle Pete
(married to my mother's other sister)

10. One night in 1973,
we walked home together:
three short blocks to
a house on White Plains Road
but it took twenty minutes
because there were
a dozen stops
where people enthusiastically greeted
"Mr. Pete"

11. Some of those people were
scary looking street gangsters
(non-Italian and very black)

12. Without Uncle Pete,
I would have been just another
dumb-ass Bronx-born
Italian boy

13. That house on White Plains Road,
is worthy of
at least fourteen more reasons
why I love the Bronx
and always will

14. White Plains Road memories
are in the underbelly
of every page of
The GodFather of Math
 Trilogy

© Autobiography Of No One In Particular © ... 2 More Chapters

 _______________________________________________________________________________________________

Chapter 14

I love American history
but it is much older
than I am

I enjoy
reading about it
despite not having been there
for most of it

He or she
who writes history
is a writer of mystery
armed with a fistful
of facts
jigsaw-puzzled together
and glued over
with the author's lust
to make
the New York Times
best-seller list

The mystery holds water
wetted by
the author's glibness
and gusto for fictional interludes
that are never labelled
as such

But if it is a matter
of my personal history,
a fictional prelude
morphs into melodies

I have no idea what that means
but I like the sound
of it

Said
Mr. No One In Particular
***

Chapter 15

I got to where I am
by not being
anywhere else

And I have yet to meet
a person
for whom
that wasn't true

"Approximations of the truth"
is another name
for those fictional interludes

No word in the English language
has more synonyms
than the word
HELP

Many of those synonyms
are not even words, per se:

Body language speaks louder
than most words

Very very few words
in the English language
have more synonyms
than the word
TRUTH

Approximately

The best friend
of the Truth
is
THE LIE

Without it,
the Truth would have
no place to hide
