A Re-Formatted Quote From His Book Entitled LETTERS

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Fear likes to hitch rides
on all sorts of words
and images.

When fear intrudes
on your thinking
it may be an old fear
hitching a ride still,
but not one
which need not
really concern you
anymore.

Apologies to ECKERT PREU And DUSTY BAKER

________________________________________________________________________________________________

It would be damn near impossible
to find two men
with more opposite personalities.

I apologize to ECKERT PREU
because I immediately
created a page
about him
after the most recent concert by
The Long Beach Symphony.

That page, however will NOT
appear here
but what will appear here
is
ENRICO CHAPELA BARBA's
—a stunningly violently beautiful composition—
which the LB Symphony's home page
had yet to post
 two weeks after
our world-class symphony orchestra
insanely and perfectly
accompanied
the piece

As for  RUSTY BAKER
suffice it to say
that he is The 73rd King
whose tribute page
will be blogged
many weeks after
the King was crowned

In my immeasurably platonic way,
I love both of these men

Once When We Were Young ... Another Tenth Anniversary

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Only people who met
on the south side
of their lives
can share
such an image
with the words
"When we were young"

Ten years ago today
—being November 25, 2012—
Carol Robson
+
Paul Oliverio
spoke
for the first time

"How did you get my phone number?"
were the first words
she ever said to me

Between
2012 and 2016,
we spoke on the phone
one thousand times

She became
a California resident
and my roommate
in August, 2016

For better or worse,
we haven't stopped talking

Ten Years Ago, Yesterday

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Yesterday was
November 22, 2022
—therefore—
ten years ago
yesterday was
November 22, 2012

Both days began
with my first conscious thought
being it was the anniversary of

That is,
the assassination of
President John F. Kennedy
11/22/63

 Little did I know
that ten years ago yesterday
would give me
something else
—something much more personal—
to honor

My relationship with
Carol Robson
began on
November 22, 2012
because of this image:
Her variation of
"The Good Shepherd,"
featuring
her favorite priest
a/k/a
my Uncle,
Father Frank Oliverio

Mr. and Mrs. CarPeo
celebrated our anniversary
by going to the movies
and having lunch
on 4th Street
A pleasant time
was had by all

The Culturally Challenged ... Imagination And Reality

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Imagine
a Broadway production
of The New Testament
where every reference to
"Jesus Christ"
is replaced with the name
"George Clooney"
who is the star of the show

And Clooney's influence
upon theater critics
is such that
none would dare
do anything
but praise
his performance
profusely

His influence
is such that no seat
would go unsold
and no ticket buyer
would dare
defy the critics

Thus becoming
the culturally
challenged

To a large portion
of the American public,
however,
the actual
New Testament
is sacred and classic
literature

Thankfully,
the premise
of this page is
imaginary
and George Clooney
is not that bold
(I hope)

But the word
"classic"
can easily be applied
to the silver screen

It would be
virtually impossible
for
Citizen Kane
+
Casablanca
to not be described
as "classic movies"

Meaning,
they exist to be
viewed, appreciated
and discussed

And never, ever
to be duplicated
in any way
shape or form

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
starring Gregory Peck
is also a "classic movie"

However,
an un-imaginary man
with an ego bigger than
Mississippi
has challenged
the definition of
"classic movie"

His name is Adam Sorkin
and he has brought
To Kill A Mockingbird
to Broadway
so maybe we should pray
for
the culturally challenged
who buy tickets
to see the production

But not pray to hard
because those people
have very deep pockets

Happy Googling
to anyone
who reads this page

About The Artist We Saw Last Saturday Night ... Page 2

________________________________________________________________________________________________

4
The venue was
the Carpenter Center
on the campus
of Cal State Long Beach

Moments before
the artist appeared
on stage,
the US Senate race
was decided
with Democrat
Catherine Cortez Masto
being declared the winner,
guaranteeing her party
still "held" the Senate

5
The lights dimmed
when the director
of the Carpenter Center
appeared on stage
and said
"What happens in Vegas,
goes to Washington"
We all cheered
maddeningly

6
She then introduced the artist
whose voice came from off-stage
"We are now neck-and-neck
with fascism"

7
The artist was
and you might be thinking:
Is a stand-up comic
truly an artist?

8
In a world
where tragedy
is doing
a global fox trot,
the stand-up comic
may be
our most important
artist

9
Mr. Maron's set
was approximately
ninety minutes
and
Mr. and Mrs. CarPeo
agreed:
Sometimes we loved him,
sometimes we hated him
but he kept us enthralled
and laughing
all night long

About The Artist We Saw Last Saturday Night

________________________________________________________________________________________________

1
If I had known in advance,
that the artist would portray
his parents with toxic shades
of black,
I would not have shelled out
$150 to view
his exhibit

2
That money would have been
 better invested in
the county tax office
or the equally exciting
home owners association

3
If the artist
could read these words,
he might declare them
Absolute worthless bullshit
and it would be impossible
for me to disagree
without laughing
my ass off

More Poetry From Hooda Helami

________________________________________________________________________________________________

In every town,
they have soft shoes
and balls
perfect for bowling

In Las Vegas,
they have lost wages
that keep
the dice rolling

There are Rolling Stones
in antique performance
giving satisfaction and
memories that dance

All over America,
there is Freedom
packaged to assure
you and you and you
that each person
 is one of a kind

Everywhere
there are
ideas to inhale
moods to manipulate
you to believe
you have
your own mind

Every poem
has a poet
and a friend
and maybe a phrase
that says
The End

Positively 4th Street And Quesadilla Heaven

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Immediately after watching
a 180-minute film
across the street,
Mr. and Mrs. CarPeo
dined at  Lola's

We agreed our dinner
was utterly delicious
but we hardly had
more to say
about it

All we really talked about
was what we had
just witnessed
across the street
on 4th Street

Our conversation
was so vivid
that people dining
at adjacent tables
listened in
and offered to
buy us drinks

Imagine sitting through
a three-hour movie
and not being bored
for more than
three seconds

Though deserving of
the maximum 5-stars
YELP allows,
Kelsey
—our server at Lola's—
was asked a question
when I pointed
my finger
directly across the street

What do you think
that marquee is referring to?

"TAR,"
she quickly responded,
"is the La Brea Tarpits."

I could have told her
she was wrong
and reduced
 her tip by 50%
but I did not do so

"It's a movie about
the first female conductor
ever to lead the orchestra
at the Berlin Philharmonic,
one of the world's
most prestigious sites
for classical music
performances.
The woman's name is
Lydia Tar.

"Her attitude is such
  that it is impossible
not to hate her
but you can't take
your eyes off her
and
(at least ten times)
she says things
that you want to quote.

"All the hatred
you'll have for her
will do battle with
awe and admiration
for courage
  in her DNA."

"I'd love to see the movie."

"Are you working tomorrow?"

"No."

"Good. It's the last day
TAR is screening
across the street.
I will get
two tickets for you
and a friend.
The manager is
a friend of ours
and he will admit you
to whichever screening
you want to attend."

"Thank you.
I'd like to see it
with my mother.
She's been playing violin
for one hundred years,
more or less."
