She/He Poem #142857

________________________________________________________________________________________________

She puts the down
in his up
He puts the tears
in her cup

She puts the wrong
in his right
He puts the grounding
in her flight

But him without her
her without him
chances of survival
would be slim

The 170th Bullet: The Exact Opposite

________________________________________________________________________________________________

We all need to be healthy.

But if you think
—24/7—
of nothing
but "good health,"
the exact opposite
will be the result.

On The Mount Rushmore of Tennis ...

________________________________________________________________________________________________

There is a place for
 who is presently
a brilliant eminence
as a tennis broadcaster

Yesterday
Martina described
a 4th round match
as
"the most exciting match
of the tournament"

This was an accurate description
and I, for one,
nearly had a coronary
in front of my TV
cheering for

However,
the next televised match
featured
+
and it was
—stroke for stroke—
twice as exciting
as the previous match
simply because
it was twice as long as
the previous match

If you don't know
who Rafael Nadal is,
suffice it to say
he is a direct descendant of
Albert Einstein
with a level
of athletic talent
combining
Tom Brady, Michael Jordan,
and Babe Ruth

Since 2005,
Nadal had played
a total of 108 tennis matches
at the French Open

He won 105 of them
and lost only
three of them

But yesterday,
he nearly lost to
!!!

I forgot
which broadcaster
said it but the poetic
closing comment
about the victor
of this
 four-and-a-half hour
is something
out of Shakespeare:

WILL LIVE
TO FIGHT
ANOTHER DAY

A Boy And His Headphones

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

A boy and his headphones
got side-swiped by
while listening to
Yellow Submarine

The boy
sometimes
pretends to be
a 73-year-old man
Remove his headphones
and the real world
becomes his nemesis

But remove every nemesis
and everything
becomes a
drone

The Wonderful + Weird World Of Words ... Boggles The Mind

________________________________________________________________________________________________

To be in love,
to be wed,
et al
you need a betrothal

Throughout your family
this bold word
will be heard:

BETROTHAL

And if
—to you—
it's all the same,
let's reduce it to
a word game

To quote Dr. C.I. Scrabble"
You don't need a goggle
to play Boggle
and you don't need a wig
to think big

And
what is really cool:
I assume you know
the Boggle rule:
—forming subsets of the original word—
the longer and bigger
newly formed words are
the better the chances of victory
***
****
*****

B-E-T-R-O-T-H-A-L
and you get
throb
broth
bloat
...
...
breath
bother
BROTHEL

To poeticize
forming a "subset"
—let me say—
one thing to another
does segue

That
BETROTHAL
segues into
BROTHEL
makes the mind
Wiggle and Woggle
which might name
two employees of
such an establishment
😋😋😋

Sister Mary Riemann In Central Park

________________________________________________________________________________________________

The nun
with the vicious curve ball
was the star of
Saint Cecilia's Softball team

Sister Mary Riemann
was also the reason
High Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral
was ill-attended
on game day

That is when
devout, wealthy Catholics
gathered at the softball fields
to cheer for
Saint Cecilia's Softball team
(and make large donations)

This particular Sunday,
they were playing
the Naughty Nuns of Nanuet
who featured
home-run slugger
Sister Hank O'hara

Sister Mary Riemann
struck out Hank
three times
and the Cecilias
coasted to a 6-0 victory

The game-end celebration
in Central Park
was long-lasting
and festive

Everyone was granted
absolution
and ran for cover
when there was
thunderous applause
from the sky

🙏
🙏 🙏
🙏 🙏 🙏

The Boy Who Read SUPERMAN Comics In Church

________________________________________________________________________________________________

At the Universal Studio Church,
Reverend Stevie Buddly
gave his Sunday School students
a special assignment:
draw pictures of God

Universally respecting
Freedom of Religion,
Reverend Buddly expected
twenty children to draw
dramatically different images

After three hours
of Sunday School,
—using hundreds of crayons,
highlighters and Sharpies—
this proved to be true

However,
minutes after
the assignment began,
a boy named Fredo
was reading
a Superman Comic Book

"Fredo, you're supposed to be
drawing God,
why are you reading
a comic book?"

"Because I finished the assignemt"
and the boyturned over
the sheet of drawing paper
on his desk

It was a pencil-drawn
straight line

"God is a straight line,"
Fredo explained,
"that connects us
to our soul, to our community,
to our family, to each other.
What more do we need?"

Beginning the following Sunday,
Fredo say next to
Reverend Buddly

The seven-year-old boy
 was now the
Pastor's assistant

My KURT VONNEGUT Dream Inspired By Rocky Road

________________________________________________________________________________________________

I needed a long walk after eating two gallons
of Rocky Road ice cream
in three days.

It was October and the 1971World Series
scooped it into my face

So I walked and walked
and forgot to sleep or eat.

I walked
all the way from Long Island
to Indiana.

 When I got there
all I wanted was a cigaret
and a familiar face
offered me a Pall Mall.
I thanked him profusely
and told him  Pall Mall
was my Father's brand.

He said "I knew that"
and he also knew my Mother
smoked filtered Tareyton.

But the first words I spoke
to Kurt Vonnegut
—pointing to the shrubbery—
were Those are not Begonias

"That is correct, young man.
You sound like an almost intelligent person."

He lit my Pall Mall and let 1001 words
flow from my well-walked body.

I didn't mention Rocky Road ice cream
but all I talked about was
Rocky Point and Uncle Paul
and Aunt Pauline.

They lived on Begonia Road
but their driveway was flanked by
Hydrangeas of various hue
and the dinner they served
was what patrons of their
Manhattan restaurant
paid beaucoup bucks
to their endless delight.

I'll never forget those
mega-magnificent Italian meals
and the football games my cousins
 —post-pasta—
played in a huge yard
with my sister Lynda
always being the winning quarterback.

—For the next fifty years—
every time I saw Hydrangeas
I thought of Begonia Road
and the bounty of those
special Sundays
beatified by
Paul and Pauline Nunzio.

"Paul, you are about to awaken
and I am about to fall deep asleep."

Sometimes, Her Name Is Sheila

________________________________________________________________________________________________

The pay phone rings
and everyone knows
it is for her

Twenty minutes later,
she gets into
a man's car

Driven around the block,
it parks
in the alley

An hour later,
she has fifty dollars
in her pocket

Then the feast begins:
most of the money
is spent
at Pizza Hut

The rest is spent
on beer

The pay phone
will ring again
sometime after
midnight
