It began as the GODFATHER OF MATH, evolved into the GOODFATHER OF MATH. Now this. Go figure...

A Model Poet + Her Appreciation: Akhmatova And Modigliani

________________________________________________________________________________________________

One goes in straightforward ways,
One in a circle roams:
Waits for a girl of his gone days,
Or for returning home.

But I do go -- and woe is there --
By a way nor straight, nor broad,
But into never and nowhere,
Like trains -- off the railroad.

Anna Akhmatova
One Goes In...

Artist:
Amadeo Modigliani

Model:
Anna Akhmatova

Modigliani was born
on July 12, 1884.

He died in 1920.

Akhmatova was born
in 1887.

This is what the model
wrote about the artist:

He seemed to me encircled with a dense ring
of loneliness.

SPETS + STEPS is the longest  palindrome  to appear

Without reflective surfaces, vanity would not exist.

Without reflective surfaces,  it would be impossible
to go through the looking glass.

Without a last footnote, this page would never end.

A Raymond Carver Poem

________________________________________________________________________________________________

THE COBWEB

by Raymond Carver

A few minutes ago, I stepped onto the deck
of the house. From there I could see and hear the water,
and everything that’s happened to me all these years.
It was hot and still. The tide was out.
No birds sang. As I leaned against the railing
a cobweb touched my forehead.
It caught in my hair. No one can blame me that I turned
and went inside. There was no wind. The sea
was dead calm. I hung the cobweb from the lampshade.
Where I watch it shudder now and then when my breath
touches it. A fine thread. Intricate.
Before long, before anyone realizes,
I’ll be gone from here.

Or 5AM, whichever comes first.

When Starbucks opens its doors,
they baristas pour out all those lattes
they frap all their  ccinos,
and they vent all their Ventes...

All those cups of coffee–
or coffee-based cups–
have to fit
somewhere

Did you hear the one about the daughter
of a Founding Father of Starbucks:

She had a 550 on her Math SAT pre-test
and then got a 730 on the actual test.

But her tutor was seriously disappointed.

I know this for a fact because
the tutor was me:
THE GODFATHER OF MATH.

This happened in December, 2008.

The Father of the student was responsible
for some of the first fine art to grace the walls
of the first 500 Starbucks.

This Founding Father of  was an elder
to visionary (and CEO) George Schultz
and his name rhymes with  faults.

His daughter should have had
at least a 760 on her Math SAT
but her mother refused to take
my input seriously.

But if you know a high school student
who wants a 700 score or above on the Math SAT,
please contact this website.

Benjamin Franklin & The Brignac Sisters

________________________________________________________________________________________________

To the Brignac sisters, Ben Franklin bequeathed
a very small fraction of his estate.

Mr. Franklin called them his dancing bears
and they called him big bad Benny.

Anise had an IQ of 1776.

The inferior intelligence of her sister
was an IQ of only 1492.

Bette wore colonial leggings cut shorter
than had ever been seen in the colonies
and thereby invented hot pants.

Her first lover was a slave named James Brown.

The first postmistress sold more  postage stamps
per hour than any postmaster in the history
of the United States.

“B. Free Franklin” was the postmark,
technically stamped by a slave named James Brown.

After the American Revolution, the Brignac sisters
lived in an ostensibly free society but strict
behavioral guidelines morally
restricted their gender.

However, the word “sub-servient”
was not in the Brignac dictionary.

Anise married Sammy Adams and drove him
so crazy, he had to brew his own beer.

To the descendents of Bette and Anise,
that small fraction of money just kept
getting “improperly”–ha!–
larger and larger.

To be continued upon request

Brooklyn Baseball Team With No Bats Or Balls But With Gavel

________________________________________________________________________________________________

This is the 1860

The Atlantics were a founding member
of the National Association of Base Ball Players–
the sport's first organized league that held
the championship from 1859 through 1861.

The card is a photograph mounted on a 2.5" x 4" cardboard
...probably taken in a Brooklyn photo studio.

An undated newspaper clipping pasted to the back
lists the players' names.

The card will be auctioned on July 30th.

This is a seminal artifact, not just of baseball,
but of American history,

said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage.

It ranks with the most significant mementos
of the sport's infancy ever to surface and is,
quite possibly, the only team card on Earth
printed before the first drop of blood
was spilled in the American Civil War.
