was the first African-American
baseball player to win
a World Series ring.
His team, the Cleveland Indians,
won the 1948 World Series.
The New York Yankees had won
the five previous World Series,
defeating Jackie Robinson's
Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947
(and also in 1949).
Allen Ginsberg was a poet
and political activist who helped
define the Beat Generation
and the counter-culture
of the Sixties.
Both Mr. Doby and Mr. Ginsberg
attended East Side High School
in Paterson, New Jersey.
