In 1968,
hired me
to "police" the beaches
3000 miles east
of where I photographed
the image on this page
The highlight of the first day
on the job
was smoking a joint
with fellow beach guard
KEVIN O'GRADY
while listening to
by the Beach Boys
I had met Kevin
only fifteen minutes
prior to
that experience
We became
former beach guards
eight weeks later
when we drove to
California
where neither of us
had ever been
before
The "pilot"
of that journey was
the late, great
