It began as the GODFATHER OF MATH, evolved into the GOODFATHER OF MATH. Now this. Go figure...

Before And After Go Through The Looking Glass

________________________________________________________________________________________________

This postcard
was created
as part of
a campaign
to sell plots of land
on the North Shore

of Long Island

The year was 1938

No one from my family
was there at the time

but my parents bought
a summer home
in Rocky Point
in 1959:

Twenty-one years after
that beach scene image
was photographed
*********

The second photo
of Rocky Point
is from 2018

I moved from Rocky Point
to California in 1981

Thirty-seven years before
that Rocky Point Clubhouse
image was  photographed
*********

In the first image,
a red line highlights
a black rock in
the water

In the second image,
a black line highlights
a red rose on
the table

You might ask why
I posted each photograph twice
and I might answer
Because two of the most
monumental memories
of my life are associated
with the highlighted details

Anyway, the AFTER memory
—approximately fifty years
after the beach photograph was taken—
involved a psychiatrist who was
more of a friend to me
than a therapist

That monumental moment
was articulated  here

But the very specific memory
associated with the floor beneath
the red rose involved a bunch
of teenagers who paid ten cents
every Friday night in the summer of '62
at the Rocky Point Clubhouse

We danced to whatever
Rock 'n Roll songs
—or Rhythm 'n Blues
or Soul music—
Nicky Brozini played
on the phonograph
situated at the top
of the staircase

Please note:
Nicky is a life-long friend
who recently sent me
the 1938 postcard image
and without whom
this page would not exist

Anyway, at this particular ten-cent dance,
something spontaneous happened
which had never happened before:

This particular memory
is so monumental that I
may have posted it before
but it is so deeply tattoed
on my heart and soul
that it might as well be
written across the sky

I was dancing with Connie Torelli

She was three years older than me
and the same age as my sister
who was her best friend

The song was Dion's
Lovers Who Wander

This boy was thirteen years-old
in 1962 and was dumb enough
to never touch a sixteen year-old girl

I was more shy than sly
at that age and was never
the best dancer on the floor
but quite possibly
the most interesting

The next thing that happened
to Connie and Paul was...
her best friend and my sister,
LINDA OLIVERIO gathered
a whole bunch of kids around us
and within thirty seconds,
we were the only couple dancing
in the Rocky Point Clubhouse

I made less eye contact
with Connie than I did
with Linda and remember thinking
Sister Dearest, I'm gonna get you for this

The whole thing lasted
no longer than three minutes
but I have re-created it
in my head three thousand times

I have re-created it
in my heart and soul
three thousand other times

St. Patrick's, Scott Fitzgerald, Starbucks, And Father Frank

________________________________________________________________________________________________

In Long Beach, CA
I am about to drink
my jazillionth cup
of Starbucks coffee

In New York, NY
my one and only cup
of Starbucks coffee
was purchased on August 24, 2015
from the ground floor
of the building housing
Scott Fitzgerald's
literary agent,
Harold Ober

I carried my refill
five blocks—while
Mrs. CarPeo was
getting drilled
by her dentist
on the same floor
as the literary agency
which is still alive
and well

This image was taken
outside the door
of the business office
of St. Patrick's Cathedral

In the late Nineteen Nineties,
Father Frank was the
"business administrator"
of St. Pat's but many people there
knew him as  Monsignor Oliverio

He told me that
his most satisfying experience
during those years was in Harlem:
officiating midnight basketball games
between Bloods and Crips

The only time they would fight
was when each gang insisted
on paying for the referee's
breakfast

In 2015, that referee's nephew,
with a jazillion pounds of bravado,
expected a royal carpet treatment
from the secretaries within
St. Patrick's business office
after informing them
about his Uncle with the St. Patrick's
sanctioned midnight mission

Intelligently,
One secretary ignored me

(Maybe I should have
told  them about the time
my Uncle gave directions
to Cardinal Cook on how to walk
around the St. Patrick's square city block
while the most important Catholic
in the United States was leading
a protest march)

The other secretary politely
gave me a Xeroxed timeline of
Pope Francis' two days in New York City
which would commence
exactly one month from that day

That may explain why
half the people I saw inside
St. Patrick's  Cathedral
were construction workers

So I didn't feel guilty
about carrying a Starbuck's cup
while visiting the most sacred
Catholic church in America

The cup, however,
was trashed two weeks later

Mrs. CarPeo—despite her disappointment
we did not join the jazillion people
lining the streets to view
Pope Francis' motorcade—
saved the Xeroxed itinerary

As to its exact wherabouts,
you're guess is as good as mine

Footnotes
Like Father Frank before him,
Pope Francis also spent quality time
in Harlem

I wish I could say the same thing
about Scott Fitzgerald

But Scott and Zelda did get married
at St. Patrick's Cathedral

The next Fitzgerald page is  here

I wish I could say
I linked all my Father Frank pages together

But divine intervention would not allow

Happy googling to anyone

Euclid Was Also Known As The Pythagorean Executive Secretary

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Let all who prate of Beauty hold their peace,

And lay them prone upon the earth and cease

To ponder on themselves, the while they stare

At nothing, intricately drawn nowhere
In shapes of shifting lineage; let geese

Gabble and hiss, but heroes seek release

From dusty bondage into luminous air.

O blinding hour, O holy, terrible day,
When first the shaft into his vision shone

Of light anatomized! Euclid alone

Has looked on Beauty bare. Fortunate they

Who, though once only and then but far away,
Have heard her massive sandal set on stone.

Footnotes
The title is a quote from Frances Steerling
given during his address to an international
conference of Geometry teachers

Pythagoras refused to allow
any of his theories to be written
on paper but Euclid, born two hundred years
after Pythagoras, did so
and then some

The title quote was his introduction
to the recital of Ms. Millay's poem

The quote got the louder laugh
but the poem got a standing ovation.

She Loves The Jerk ... And Other SHE-istic Poetry

The highlighted Hiatt
is worthy of a page title
BUT
my personal favorite is
the blackmarked McCarthy.

Jack permitted me
to reproduce the lyrics.

I wish I could say
the same thing about
the Berry song
with the same exact title.

The two songs have
nothing else in common
other than being
worthy of your
ear time.

Chuck Berry's
She Still Loves You
was released
posthumously.

But I thank
my lucky stars
that Jack McCarthy
is still humous.
