My father-in-law is a farmer in Virginia and he knows this agro-supplier who told him that these machines were popular with CHURCHES where they are wound up on Sundays to "deflect evil."
That's very funny but from what I learned about churches in Virginia [where a new one is created monthly], I certainly believe "evil deflectors" is code for putting more money in the collection plate
