On February 4, 1959 ... I was delivering newspapers in Brooklyn
ReplyDeleteon my bicycle. Three New York newspapers had bold headlines
about the plane crash (of the night before) that killed
Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper.
I kept twenty copies of each paper and preserved them
in a vault ... Thirty years later, they were auctioned off
for a half-million dollars.
I had a sculpture commissioned of Buddy, Richie and Bopper
and donated it to the city of Clear Lake, Iowa.
The unveiling of the statue was presided over
by Waylon Jennings, who was on that tour
with Buddy Holly but gave up his plane seat
to the Big Bopper.
That's quite a story.
