It began as the GODFATHER OF MATH, evolved into the GOODFATHER OF MATH. Now this. Go figure...

Poem Begun In 1972 And Completed This Morning

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Standing in defiance
of all things in science
is like
pulling out all your hair
just to protect your head
from air

  1. What did it look like in 1972?

  2. Ugly bravado from a "Pure" mathematician:
I stand in defiance of all things science
    plus a long forgotten verse
    about "non-compliance"

  3. Why did you use the adjective "Pure"?

    1. To explain the gap between getting
a perfect score on 1968 NY Geometry Regents
AND a 33 on my Earth Science final

Reading what I just wrote allows
for the possibility the first draft was written
      while I still had parents
      AND recited it for one
      or both of them

      Pure Mathematics is strictly about
numerical patterns and all things corollary
to those patterns OR what I used to call
      the "psychology of numbers"
      while APPLIED MATHEMATICS
      involved chemistry/physics/ biology ...

I loved the former and was totally ignorant of
      [and terrified] by the latter

    1. YES it does
Thank you so much for asking:
      "fitful" should be "fistful"
