Everybody and their Mother's Uncle Charlie has a pet theory about the origin of BLACK FRIDAY so I am going to offer mine: Once upon a time, the shortest month (February) had two legal holidays, honoring Presidents WASHINGTON and LINCOLN.
The marketing mavens of Madison Avenue decided that was the perfect time to cash in on the phrase Washington slept here and encourage patriotic Americans to buy beds at discounted prices.
Matresses and box springs sold up the wazoo and—of course— all of the bed sheets were white. As a result, the First President of the United States and the first assassinated President became associated with the phrase White Sale.
But without "white" there would be no "black" and the WHITE SALE morphed into a phrase superior to BLACK SALE and became Black Friday.
